Dumbo's Magic Feather and other fairy tales...

As a specialty gun dealer I get to listen to a lot of interesting reasons to purchase a new target shotgun. Some...,few...,are willing to admit they just want a new toy. Others have had the old gun for so long its starting to have some reliability issues so rather than spend a ton of money on a rebuild they buy new. On the rare ocaision I change shotguns, I try and change when I'm shooting really well...the logic is I can determine if the new gun will perform equal to or better than the old one.

Unfortunately, many shooters look for a new gun when they are in a significant slump.(That means shooting well below their normal scores, consistently.)  Although it might make you feel better psychologically, it probably won't cure your shooting woes! More often than not you'll have more obstacles to overcome learning the quirks of the new gun and trying to improve your shooting skills. Over the years I have found that each shotgun has it's own personality or feel. Guns of the same brand (ie.: Guerini, Zoli, Blaser, etc) wil have a simiar "feel". So if you switch from an Italian shotgun to a German or USA made one, the time it takes to get used to it increases. Changing from an auto to an over and under is a difficult transition due to the slower lock time of the auto.

Remember that you only can acquire good shooting skills with knowledge (coaching), practice and application. Mental preparation and a positive attitude won't hurt either. If buying a new gun was the only answer, rich people would be the best shooters.

Dumbo's magic feather and the money cure for shooting good scores are both fairy tales!

Shoot well and often!
